Three RDC basketball players earn all-star honours

Three student athletes from RDC have been named to ACAC Basketball All-Conference teams this season.

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference has announced Omon Edobar of the RDC Kings as Men’s Basketball South Rookie of the Year and a member of the Men’s Basketball South First All-Conference team.

Teammate Dshawn Tyrell has also been named to the First All-Conference team in the south, while Emily White of the RDC Queens was selected for the ACAC’s Women’s Basketball South Second All-Conference team.

Officials with RDC Athletics say Edobar has helped lead the Kings to a third place finish and a 14-7 record in the south this season, while also earning a trip to the playoffs. In 19 games, the 6’3 guard from Calgary averaged 18.5 points which ranked the talented student-athlete sixth in the league. He also added 4.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

In a release, Head Coach Clayton Pottinger says Edobar was playing the most minutes for the team, ”He was contributing offensively  and defensively in multiple positions and showed veteran poise. It’s easy to forget that he’s a rookie when you watch him play.”

Tyrell was another strong contributor who helped lead the Kings to the playoffs. The first year guard from Malton, Ontario was close behind Edobar in league scoring, finishing seventh in ACAC Men’s Basketball with 17.8 points per game, adding 7.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and shot 48 per cent from the field.

Coach Pottinger says he’s really happy for Dshawn to earn an all-star award, “To earn a First All-Conference team selection shows the respect that he has garnered from coaches and players around the league. He’s one of the most explosive athletes and has demonstrated his ability to shoot, rebound and play with energy.”

White was selected to the ACAC Women’s Basketball South Second All-Conference team with contributions at both ends of the court. RDC Athletics officials say the third year forward averaged 11.8 rebounds per game which ranked third in the league. Offensively, she scored 11.9 points and connected on 51.4 per cent of her shots from the field, placing her fourth in ACAC Women’s Basketball.

RDC Queens Head Coach Ken King says White has been a model of consistency for the Queens, “After missing six games in the first half of the season, the All-Conference team selection is a testament to what Emily can do on the basketball court. It’s awesome that she has been named an all-star every year that she has been in the league.”

Edobar and Tyrell received their awards at the ACAC Men’s Basketball Banquet and Awards February 28 in Lethbridge, while White received hers at the ACAC Women’s Basketball Banquet and Awards February 28 at SAIT in Calgary.
