A multi-sport athlete from Red Deer has been named the Alberta Sport Development Centre – Central Male Athlete of the Month for February.

Grade 10 Hunting Hills High School student Kyle Rix is a 16-year-old multi-sport athlete who is currently competing with the Central Alberta Basketball Club, Central Alberta Kings Volleyball Club and also plays on the Hunting Hills Lightning Senior Boys Basketball and Volleyball teams. In addition, Rix runs track and field and also plays on the tennis team for Hunting Hills.

ASDC-Central officials say Rix was Athlete of the Year at Eastview Middle School in both Grade 7 and 8 and was also Hunting Hills Grade 9 Athlete of the Year in 2017. Rix also won Bronze at the 2016 Alberta Summer Games with his team in basketball and was also named basketball MVP for Hunting Hills in 2017.

Rix is now in his second year with the Alberta Sport Development Centre program and according to officials has benefitted significantly from the mental skills training which has improved his ability to focus more effectively in challenging game situations. Most of his physical training takes place in the off-season given his busy practice and competition schedule.
