Second inmate dies at Drumheller Institution in span of three days

An inmate at Drumheller Insitution is dead, officials say.

Brandon Lee Mirva, 25, passed away on Tuesday while in custody.

Mirva was serving a sentence of two years for possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking, trafficking, failure to comply and failure to attend court. He had been serving that sentence since last october.

Mirva’s next of kin has been notified.

Correctional Service Canada will be reviewing the circumstances and contact the police and the coroner if required. 

The death is the second at Drumheller in three days.

Anatoly Eichman, 29, died on Sunday while serving a two year, five month, and 21 day sentence for charges realted to possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm with ammo.

He had been serving that sentence since June 2017.

On Monday, Drumheller Institution was put on lockdown at about 3:20 p.m. to allow staff members to conduct an exceptional search.

Visits have been suspended and normal operations will continue when it is considered safe to do so.

Assistant Warden Maureen Quintal couldn’t confirm whether either of the deaths are connected to the lockdown, but did confirm the lockdown is ongoing.
