A 13-year-old Red Deer swimmer has been named the Alberta Sport Development Centre – Central Female Athlete of the Month for January.

Elle Couture is a competitive swimmer with the Sylvan Lake Nauticals Swim Club and an Honour Student at St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School in Red Deer.

ASDC-Central officials say Couture started swimming as a child through the Red Cross Swim Kids program in Red Deer and soon realized she loved the water. Then at age nine, started competitive swimming locally. In the fall of 2016, she joined the Nauticals coached by Trevor Burns.

Officials say Couture has had a great start to the 2017-2018 swim season, entering the 13-14 age group in November and so far earning several Short Course Championship times. She has also earned a Long Course Championship time which has qualified her for Provincial Championships.

While making great strides in all of her strokes, officials say Couture has improved the most in her Breaststroke events. She also continues to work on her technique in the pool in addition to dryland strength training which will help her to reach her goals of qualifying for Western Championships, Nationals and the Alberta Summer Games in July of 2018.
