Utility Bylaw amendment promotes water conservation, City says

Feb 5, 2018 | 4:48 PM

Red Deer city council has passed a Utility Bylaw amendment City officials say will offer residents more control over their costs.

The amendment means the average household will see an increase of approximately $2.49 per month, or about 2.4% on their utility bill, in 2018.

Changes to fixed costs and per-use costs, the City says, will offer residents more flexibility in their utility expenses.

“Utility rates for water and wastewater are made up of two components – a fixed monthly charge and a variable usage charge,” Environmental Services Manager Tim Ainscough said in a release. “By lowering fixed fees, we have increased the proportion of the bill based on actual use, which will give residents more control over their monthly bills.”

Ainscough says water conservation can play an important role in one’s overall utility bill.

“For example, a household that uses five cubic metres will see a nominal increase of 0.1% this year, while a household that uses 17 cubic metres of water will see an increase of 2.4%.”

The City’s website offers tips so residents can learn how to conserve water in their home or business.

These fee changes are effective March 1, 2018, and residents will see the rates reflected on their April utility bills.
