Ethan Anders named WHL Rookie of the Month

Feb 1, 2018 | 12:42 PM

It’s been quite the few weeks for Red Deer Rebels goaltender Ethan Anders.

The Regina native has been named WHL Rookie of the Month for January, just days after earning WHL Goaltender of the Week honours.

Anders went 3-1-3-0 last month, including a stellar four-game stretch to round out January.

The 17-year-old backstopped the Rebels to their first home ice win since October on Jan. 23, defeating Medicine Hat 4-1. He then stood tall on Jan. 27 in a 3-2 OT win over Kelowna, the Rebels’ first overtime triumph in 12 tries.

The next night, he made 42 saves in a 2-1 OT loss to Lethbridge.

He finished off the month with a 33-save shutout performance versus Saskatoon on Wednesday.

In that four-game span, Anders was first star of the night three times, and third star another night.

In January, Anders recorded a 2.22 GAA and .939 SV% in 459 minutes of action. He stopped 261 of 278 shots faced.

He is 11th in the WHL this season with a 2.95 goals against average and is tied for 10th in the league with a .910 save percentage.

Anders and the Rebels continue their road trip through the WHL’s East Division Friday, February 2 against the league-leading Moose Jaw Warriors (6 p.m. on 106.7 The Drive).
