The Fort Hills oilsands project has achieved its first oil production and will continue to ramp up through the first quarter.

Suncor Energy says the Fort Hills operation remains on track to reach 90 per cent capacity by the end of this year.

The operation 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray has a capacity of approximately 194-thousand barrels per day.

Suncor holds just over 53 per cent of the project, while Total E*P Canada owns just over 26 per cent and Teck Resources holds the remaining nearly 21 per cent.
