Red Deer Optimist Chiefs advance to Quarter-Final at Macs Midget AAA Tournament

The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs suffered their first loss at the Mac’s Midget AAA World Invitational Hockey Tournament in Calgary on Saturday.

It was a 5-2 decision to the Saskatoon Contacts but still leaves the Chiefs in first place in Pool 2 with a record of 3-1-0 with six points, one point ahead of the 2-1-1 Contacts who finished the round-robin with five.

Next up for the Chiefs, a quarter-final match-up with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Lethbridge finished with a 3-0-1 record and 7 points, good for top spot in Pool 4.

Face-off is 9 a.m. at the Father David Bauer Arena on Sunday, December 31.

The other Quarter-Final matchups include the Calgary Northstars vs the St. Albert Raiders, Fraser Valley Thunderbirds vs Regina Pat Canadians and the Calgary Buffaloes vs the New York Jr. Islanders.

Semi-Final games take place later in the day Sunday, while the Final is set for 4 p.m. at the ScotiaBank Saddledome on January 1, 2018.

The tournament runs from December 26 – January 1 and features 25 of the best Midget AAA male and eight of the best female Midget AAA hockey teams from across Canada, the United States and Europe.
