The Red Deer Rebels and Lethbridge Hurricanes are kicking-off 2018 with an off-ice challenge to see who can bring in the most blood donations in January.
106.7 The Drive will join the Rebels in promoting blood donation as part of this campaign, with the official launch locally on January 3 when the Moose Jaw Warriors visit the Red Deer Rebels at the Enmax Centrium for the first game of 2018.
Shaun Richer with Canadian Blood Services in Red Deer says it’s a fun challenge they’ve enjoyed taking part in for the past six years.
“It’s been tremendous,” says Richer. “For the month of January for us anyhow, our blood donations tend to dip a little bit because it’s right after Christmas, everybody kind of gets back into their regular routine but for us, the need is always there. Thankfully with the support of the Rebels, they’ve been able to increase that engagement with their fans and bring in a lot more blood donations for the month of January.”
Richer hopes the challenge with the Hurricanes this month results in about 1,400 blood donation and 150 new donors.
“New donors is really important to us because we’re hoping that once they donate for the first time, they’ll come back and see us for a second or third time,” says Richer. “We’ll be on site for the Rebels game Wednesday night, so if anybody has any questions, they can come by and see us and better yet, you can even book an appointment directly with us.”
Local blood recipient Brielle Robichaud and her family will also be on hand at the game at the Centrium’s Community Corner encouraging residents to book an appointment to donate in January.
Robichaud and her family know the importance of giving blood, as Brielle was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of three. In the three years since then, she has had six surgeries, 19 months of chemotherapy, numerous blood transfusions and spent a lot of time in hospital.
Brielle and her family are very grateful for the gift of blood that helped save her life.
If you would like to donate and help save a life, download the GiveBlood App or visit blood.ca to book an appointment.
Everyone who comes into the Red Deer Blood Clinic to donate this month can enter their name on behalf of the Rebels and possibly win a prize pack that will be given away at the end of January.
