Staff Sergeant and Detachment Commander of the Rocky Mountain House RCMP Mark Groves has been temporarily reassigned as the new District Advisory Non-Commissioned Officer for the Central Alberta District.
Groves will now oversee and assist the Detachment Commanders responsible for Blackfalds, Sylvan Lake, Innisfail, Rimbey, Red Deer and Rocky Mountain House.
"It will be more or less just oversight and supervision and guidance and support assisting all the detachment commanders in Central Alberta,” said Groves.
Detachment Commanders throughout Central Alberta met last week to discuss rural crime and other important matters relating to improving service delivery in Central Alberta.
One of Groves' primary assignments is to work towards implementing a crime reduction plan for the District outside of Red Deer, focusing on the rural areas.
Rocky Mountain House RCMP has been successful in significantly reducing rural crime complaints in Clearwater County, including the Leslieville and Caroline areas. This has included a reduction in theft complaints from rural residences and the oilfield industry, when comparing last year's statistics.
Rather than take a permanent transfer to headquarters, Groves said he will still reside in the community.
"Rather than be separate in a way, I thought it would be important to be imbedded in the community and be close to these areas if I need to be there. I'll maintain my office here in Rocky for the time being," he said.
Groves adds that this new role will be a challenge but is looking forward to it nonetheless.
"Taking the last over a decade as a Detachment Commander and taking that experience and being able to help other detachment commanders with their day-to-day operations and the challenges that they face, offering them some advice on what’s worked for me over the years and what hasn’t, I think that is going to be good," Groves concluded.
Sergeant Jay Penner, the Operations Non Commissioned Officer for Rocky Mountain House Detachment, will be the Acting Detachment Commander during Staff Sergeant Groves' absence.
