Taking on Team Canada went much better the second time around for the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs.
After losing to Canada’s National Women’s Team 5-1 at the Enmax Centrium last month, the Chiefs earned a 5-1 win of their own Tuesday night at the Markan MacPhail Centre in Calgary.
Daylan Kuefler beat Canadian goaltender Geneviève Lacasse top open the scoring for Red Deer 3:13 into the game.
Noah Danielson made it 2-0 at 15:19 of the first period.
Tye Carriere made it 3-0 only 28 seconds into period two. Ryan McBeath scored less than a minute later to make it 4-0 Chiefs. Ethan Schlag scored Red Deer’s final tally midway through period three.
Sarah Nurse scored the lone goal for Team Canada midway through the second period.
Chiefs goalie Bretton Park turned aside all 11 shots he faced while Duncan Hughes stopped 13 of the 14 shots on goal that came his way.
Lacasse allowed four goals in net for Team Canada before giving way to Ann-Renée Desbiens.
The Chiefs are back in action Friday night at the Kinex Arena when they take on Leduc at 7 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Optimist Chiefs found out who they’ll be playing at this year’s edition of the Mac’s Midget Tournament in Calgary.
Red Deer is in Pool 2 along with the Calgary Flames, Belarus National U17, Saskatoon Contacts and Vancouver NW Giants.
