Red Deer Curling Classic hits the ice this weekend

Nov 16, 2017 | 11:27 AM

The Red Deer Curling Classic once again takes over the Pidherney Centre this weekend.

It’s the latest stop on the 2017-18 World Curling Tour season.

“We’ve got a great mix of local and international talent,” says Dustin Eckstrand with the event organizing committee. “With the Winter Olympics coming, up you’ve got a great chance to see international teams that will be competing [there] in February.”

Teams from Japan, Korea, Scotland, Switzerland, Denmark and Russia are hitting the ice this weekend along with plenty of local talent that includes men’s rinks skipped by Lowell Peterman and Scott Cruikshank and Marla Sherrer on the women’s side.

Reigning Alberta provincial champion Brendan Bottcher is competing in Red Deer fresh after earning a spot at the Canadian Olympic trials last weekend.

“You’re getting to watch world class curlers competing on the same ice you’re playing on during league nights,” Eckstrand adds. “You get to see a lot of Alberta teams and how close they are to being in that elite level that you’re seeing on the international side.”

This year’s Red Deer Curling Classic is also raising funds in support of the Red Deer College curling teams, as well as junior curling programs in our city.

Admission is $10 per day, or $30 for the entire event.

Draws get underway at 9:30 Friday morning and run through Sunday evening. Monday’s championship draw goes at 3:30 p.m.
