Nov 1, 2017 | 9:24 AM

The Alberta Sport Development Centre – Central (ASDC-C) Female Athlete of the Month for October 2017 is Drew Persson.

Persson is a 17-year-old Eckville resident and Grade 12 student at Notre Dame High School in Red Deer and is a competitive wrestler.

Drew started wrestling in September 2015 at Crank Wrestling and has not stopped since.

In her first season, Persson won High School Rural Provincials. In the summer of 2016, she travelled to Iowa and competed in the 2016 Catch Wrestling World Championship, winning a bronze medal.

Drew won High School Rural Provincials again this season as well as the ASAA High School Provincials. She also captured the 2017 AAWA Provincial Junior gold medal and 2017 AAWA Provincial Juvenile silver medal.

Following these successes, Drew competed at the 2017 Juvenile Freestyle Wrestling Nationals and Juvenile Greco Roman Wrestling Nationals, bringing home the Silver medal in Greco-Roman, in her first competition in the Greco-Roman style.

Drew was an alternate for Team Alberta this past summer, training across the province and in California in preparation for the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

Persson’s goals are to attend the University of Calgary and compete at the U-Sport level, with the ultimate goal of representing Canada in an Olympic Games.

With Drew’s strong work ethic, her undeniable athletic abilities and her training experiences with ASDC-Central she will surely continue to grow and develop in her sporting career.

ASDC-Central thanks Tom Bast Sports for celebrating the ASDC-Central Athlete of the Month recipients by the provision of commemorative apparel for each recipient.
