Blackfalds Mounties arrest stolen vehicle suspect following lengthy pursuit

Oct 27, 2017 | 7:01 PM

A 28-year-old man faces charges following a lengthy foot chase with Blackfalds RCMP on Friday.

The series of events started around 2:20 a.m. when Mounties on patrol in Blackfalds came across a stolen white Ford Econoline van heading southbound on Highway 2A.

Police activated emergency lights while the van continued southbound on 2A. A spike belt was deployed successfully prior to the traffic circle on Highway 597. The vehicle continued southbound on Highway 2A towards Red Deer before pulling over near the Blindman Industrial Park.

As the driver fled on foot into the industrial area, police arrested a 24-year-old female passenger in the van.

A little over four hours later, Mounties were called to a break in at a business in the Blindman Industrial area. Police responded and obtained a description of the adult male, which matched the description of the stolen van driver from overnight.

It was another five hours later, just before 11:30 a.m., when Blackfalds RCMP received a call from a concerned citizen reporting a suspicious person walking in the Blindman Industrial Park, matching the description of the adult male from the earlier incidents. Blackfalds RCMP, with the assistance of the Integrated Traffic unit as well as Red Deer Police Dog Service, responded immediately. After a foot pursuit, with the assistance of the Police Dog Service, the subject was brought into custody along the shore of the Blindman river, east of the industrial park.

Charges against the male include two counts of break and enter, five counts of resisting/obstructing peace officer, as well as possession of property obtained by crime less than or equal to $5,000.

“RCMP in Blackfalds would like to thank members of the public for their assistance in this investigation,” Staff Sgt. Ken Morrison said in a release. “It is through the cooperation of community residents and business owners that we were able to apprehend these individuals without incident.”

RCMP continue to investigate.
