A former Red Deer high school teacher facing child porn and sexual exploitation charges in our city is going to trial on a second set of similar charges out of Saskatoon.

Rhett Lundgren, 40 was scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Saskatoon on Oct. 11. The Crown has instead filed a direct indictment and the case will proceed directly to trial.

In December 2016, Lundgren was arrested and charged with attempting to access child pornography and arranging to commit a sexual offence against a child. Police in Saskatoon, where Lundgren was teaching at Walter Murray Collegiate high school, said the alleged target was a child between the age of eight and 10.

A month after being released on bail, he was charged with possession of child pornography and breach of an undertaking.

No date for the Saskatoon trial has been set.

Lundgren faces additional charges relating to when he was a teacher at Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer in 2008.

Red Deer RCMP charged him in January of this year with sexual exploitation, child pornography and corrupting children after a female victim, who was 17 at the time of the alleged offences, came forward.

Lundgren has pleaded not guilty and has elected to be tried by judge alone. A preliminary hearing will take place in Red Deer on January 17, 2018.
