Red Deerians invited to check out XPlore Sport Day

Sep 7, 2017 | 9:35 PM

The third annual XPlore Sport Day is on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday at the G.H. Dawe Community Centre.

Rob Meckling, Sport Community and Program Facilitator for The City of Red Deer, said the event is a great one and they’re hoping to continue to grow the event in future years as well.

“We hope to continue to make this grow and bring an exciting opportunity in the community for families and children to come out and test and see sports that they probably never thought that they would ever actually ever participate in or see or they’ve only seen on TV and said ‘I would love to try that’.”

Meckling added that it’s a great chance for parents and kids alike to come out and try some of the sports and see what’s available in Red Deer all for free.

Quidditch is among the sports played here in Red Deer that will be present at XPlore Sport Day. Meckling said it’s important to continue growing the diversity of sports offered in Red Deer.

“Something like the Quidditch person or the cricket person or whoever decides to bring something forward to the community and people get on board they try to find that they like it and have a passion.”

The GH Dawe will be full to the brim with different sports to try including even some sports taking place outside like soccer. There will be demonstrations and even some games that kids can jump in on and play.

“This year is a great feature because we have water for the first time and our synchro people are so excited. They’ve been there since day one they haven’t had the opportunity so they have some really special things planned to show the community and even an opportunity for kids to get in the water to try some of the moves.”

The weather is looking great for the weekend and Meckling said it’s the perfect time to try some sports indoors and outdoors.

“You can try martial arts you can try some different things with pickle ball with rhythmic gymnastics. We even have a demonstration from Alberta Health Services.”

Alberta Health Services will be showing how to make snacks that are appropriate and healthy for kids who are out and about in the community both at practices and tournaments.

Adults are just as welcome as the kids to come on out and Meckling said he hopes to see some there with their runners on.

“Give some of these things a try with your kids, come by yourself if you don’t have kids and give it a try. The speed skating people will even be there and they have a unique little glider that they will let people come and try to see what it’s like to do the stride-and-glide on the oval ice.”

With the 2019 Canada Winter games fast approaching Meckling said it’s a fantastic opportunity for people to come and try a sport that will be heavily featured.
