Rebels impress head coach at Black and White Game

Aug 30, 2017 | 10:19 PM

It was what one would expect a training camp intra-squad game to be; a little sloppy, but hard-nosed and full of effort.

The Red Deer Rebels held their annual black and white game Wednesday night at the Enmax Centrium as the coaching staff looks to whittle down the roster ahead of the season opener on September 23.

The goals came fast and furious early on – Sherwood Park native Jacob Herauf drawing first blood for Team Black. Seven different scorers tallied in the opening 20 minutes including returning Rebels Ethan Sakowich and Akash Bains.

It was 4-3 Team Black after the first.

In the middle frame, things calmed down with just a lone goal for Team White.

In the slightly more competitive third period, a scary and unintentional knee-on-knee collision left Rebels veteran Brandon Hagel hobbling to the bench.

Hagel, a third year Rebel and Sabres draft pick, looked to be in a significant amount of pain following the play. Head Coach Brent Sutter said after the game, “He’ll be fine.”

The teams eventually found themselves headed to OT tied 5-5.

Mason McCarty, one of three 1997-born players who saw action in the game, scored the game winner.

“We were seeing things we wanted to see which was good both from young kids and veterans alike,” Sutter added post-game. “There was traffic — I like to see that. There were some good plays made — as you can see, there’s some speed on this team. I was impressed. It was a good black and white game.”

Lasse Petersen and Byron Fancy played in net for Team Black while Riley Lamb and Ethan Anders were between the pipes for Team White.

The Rebels also announced after the game a number of cuts, bringing the current roster to 35 players.

Among them were Jordan Borysiuk (Mannville, AB), Reilly Funk (Portage La Prairie, MB), Kyler Kovich (Coquitlam, BC), Jayden McCarthy (Morris, MB), Alex Morozoff (Saskatoon, SK) and Jace Isley (Grande Prairie, AB).
