The Red Deer Riggers couldn’t have picked a better way to open the 2017 Baseball Canada Men’s National Championship.

The Riggers beat the two-time defending champion Tecumseh Thunder 3-1 in their opening game of the tournament Thursday afternoon in Victoria.

Pitcher Josh Edwards tossed an absolute gem for the Riggers, tossing a complete game (7 innings) five hitter, striking out four batters and allowing just one earned run.

JP Wilner got it done for the Riggers at the plate with a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning, one of two hits for him on the day. Jason Louis added an RBI double the following inning to round out the scoring for Red Deer.
