Blood donors needed before Labour Day

Aug 24, 2017 | 11:08 AM

Red Deerians are being asked once again to consider donating blood before the Labour Day weekend.

In previous instances, Canadian Blood Services has put out the call to Canadians to come forward and donate. Earlier this summer that call worked to rebuild what at the time was a precariously low supply of blood for Canadian patients.

During the summer it is well known that blood donations decrease in frequency. While this is planned for by Canadian Blood Services, it is imperative that people continue to find the time to donate.

25,000 appointments need to be filled before Labour Day across Canada. Of these, 432 need to be filled in Red Deer.

“We anticipated a drop in blood donations during the summer months as a result of holidays, changes in routines, travel and family activities. The Labour Day long weekend is particularly challenging as families spend time wrapping up the summer before transitioning into the back to school period,” said Mark Donnison, vice president, donor relations in a media release.

“Earlier this summer we asked Canadians to take some precious time out of their summers for patients in need of blood. And they responded! To continue to meet patients’ needs, we urge new and returning donors to book an appointment starting now and through Labour Day.”
