A local man accused of posing as a lawyer to steal money from victims is going to trial.

Chance Aaron Shaw, 26, appeared in Red Deer court Wednesday morning. He pleaded not guilty to all 12 counts against him, including six counts of use, trafficking or possession of forged documents, four counts of fraud under $5,000, and one count each of forgery and false pretences.

Mounties began their investigation in March after receiving a complaint that the suspect had represented himself as a lawyer and taken money from his victims in exchange for reportedly preparing legal documents.

Nine victims reported dealing with the suspect in return for legal services on various dates between December and April, including a process server who was hired by the suspect to serve a civil claim, and one victim who grew suspicious and did not pay the suspect.
