Aug 14, 2017 | 3:17 PM

An inmate at the Pê Sâkâstêw Centre in Maskwacis has died while in custody.

At the time of his death on Saturday, Jessi Phillip Loyie was serving a sentence of five years, four months for possession of substances for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a prohibited/restricted weapon, possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order, and failure to comply with conditions. The 33-year-old had been in custody since May 2014.

Officials say Loyie’s next of kin and the coroner have been notified of his death.

Correctional Service Canada will be reviewing the circumstances of the incident, as in all cases involving the death of an inmate.
