Man arrested near Tomahawk driving a stolen vehicle

Aug 3, 2017 | 9:31 AM

A conversation with a local resident led to a man in a stolen truck being arrested in the Tomahawk area this past weekend.

On July 30 around 7 a.m. a resident of the Tomahawk area called police to report that a man in a late 1990’s silver Ford F350 came to their property asking for diesel fuel and directions to Tomahawk.

Drayton Valley RCMP tracked down the vehicle and ran the license plate, discovering that it had been stolen out of Stony Plain.

The male driver of the vehicle was arrested, and taken into custody.

18-year-old Shylo Benson, from Grande Prairie, has been charged with possession of stolen property.

Benson was also wanted on 30 criminal code offences from different jurisdictions across the province over the past year.

Sgt. Erin Matthews praised the caller, adding that giving police a call is the best way to deal with incidents like this.

“There has been a lot of suspicious people [lately]. The best advice is to contact the police, advise them of the incident and description of the individual. Try not to approach them.”

Benson is scheduled to appear in Drayton Valley Provincial Court on August 15.
