Innisfail council briefs: Town to buy Cenotaph land from school division

Jun 27, 2017 | 3:33 PM

Cenotaph land

Innisfail town council has finally wrapped up a purchase of the land which the local cenotaph sits on.

Until now, the 3400 sq.ft. area has been owned by Chinook’s Edge School Division. The Town has been looking to purchase it since last fall.

“It’s really a benefit of the town. We spent money in the past five years where we did some improvements to the structure itself and it’d be nice if it was on Town owned land,” says Director of Operations Frank Colosimo. “Maintence of the snow and sidewalk was done by the Town and by the Legion.”

Should the Town decide to sell the land in the future, the school division has first right of refusal to buy it back for the same $1 it’s being sold for now.

Firefighter recognition

Ron Huseby and John Syroid, both firefighters with the Town of Innisfail, were honoured during a recent conference in Red Deer for their 40 years of service.

Each received a gift of appreciation from the City at this week’s council meeting.

56 Street changes

Council has approved a number of  changes to speed limits on and near 56 Street.

First, the 30 km/h zone is now a 40km/h zone along 56 Street between 50 Avenue and 53 Avenue.

As well, the playground zone has been removed along 56 Street. The no-parking zone on the north side of 56 Street has also been removed.

Meanwhile, a playground and 30 km/h zone has been put in on 52 Avenue Close, south of 56 Street.

Residents provided seven responses to the Town with respect to the proposed changes and were about evenly split in terms of being in favour or against.

Pool siding

Council also accepted a proposal for completion of siding on the east side of the Innisfail Aquatic Centre.

The project will see the current brown brick facade replaced by Hardie board siding to match the building’s south and west walls. Pearl Rose Construction will be doing the work at a cost of $37,150.

Spray Park revitalization

Council also awarded tender to revitalize the local spray park’s surface to Softline Solutions for $49,492.

The park’s concrete surface will be covered with a rubberized play surfface made of recycled tire product.

Grant funding in the amount of $14,330 towards the project will be received once it is complete.
