Special Olympics torch relay comes to Red Deer

Jun 25, 2017 | 8:15 PM

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Alberta made a stop in Red Deer on Sunday.

The Final Leg Torch Run event at the Collicutt Centre was aimed at bringing awareness and raising funds for the 2017 Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games in Medicine Hat next month.

According to a media release, the tradition of the Final Leg Torch Run is for law enforcement officers representing their community to act as “Guardians of the Flame” and carry the Special Olympics Torch and “Flame of Hope” to officially start the 2017 Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games in Medicine Hat.

The 2017 Final Leg Torch Run was kicked off at the Alberta Legislature building on May 16.

Law enforcement members Sunday ran a loop that started and ended at the Collicutt Centre while carrying the Special Olympics Flame of Hope Torch.

The 2017 Final Leg Torch Run has events planned for Lethbridge and Grande Prairie before making its way to Medicine Hat on July 7.
