Two up and coming members of the Red Deer Rebels have caught the attention of Hockey Canada.

Defenceman Dawson Barteaux and goaltender Byron Fancy are among 197 players invited to the Summer Showcase in Calgary.

Barteaux is one of 16 defenceman invited to try out for Canada’s national under-18 squad that will compete at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup in the Czech Republic in August.

As a 17-year-old last season, Barteaux suited up in 24 games with the Rebels, collecting two assists and four penalty minutes. The Foxwarren, Manitoba native who came to the Rebels in the January 10 blockbuster trade with the Regina Pats is eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft.

Fancy, meantime, is one of 12 goalies invited for the under-17 development camp. A native of Claresholm, Fancy will battle for a spot at the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge played in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, B.C.

Selected by the Rebels in round two of the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, Fancy has appeared in one regular season game with the club. Last year with Lethbridge of the Alberta Midget Hockey League he posted a 3.58 goals against average and a 0.858 save percentage.

The Hockey Canada Summer Showcase, which also includes the national junior team development camp, gets underway July 22 in Calgary.
