Evergreen Elementary School repairs halted

Jun 12, 2017 | 4:49 PM

Evergreen Elementary School’s new makeover has been ditched, after a new round of tests came back showing just how bad the problem areas of the building were.

Wildrose School Division announced today that after further structural and soil testing and an investigation into the crawlspace air quality, Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure determined the school’s modernization & crawlspace remediation project is not possible.

The division says the halting of the project is due to the substantial construction challenges and increased costs associated with the modernization.

The provincial government had announced back in March funding for a modernization of the school, but no money amounts were released.

As a contingent option, Alberta Education has requested Wild Rose School Division to submit alternative proposals for the replacement of the Evergreen School Modernization Project. New proposals will be required to follow the same funding parameters as the original school modernization approval of an estimated nine million dollars.

At their next meeting on June 20 the WRSD Board of Trustees will discuss possible options for the funds, which will then be submitted to Alberta Education.

Over the summer four modular classrooms from Evergreen will be moved to H.W. Pickup, with the goal of having them ready for the start of the next school year. The configuration of schools in Drayton Valley starting in the 2017-18 school year and until the Evergreen school project is done will look like this;

Evergreen School: closed
Eldorado School: grades K-4
Aurora School: grades K-4
Drayton Christian School: grades K-9 (not affected)
H.W. Pickup: grades 5-8
FMHS: grades 9-12
