Province removes some school-related fees, caps increases

Jun 7, 2017 | 3:43 PM

EDMONTON – Schools can no longer charge families for supplies such as textbooks, paper, and photocopying, under a new School Fees and Costs Regulation signed into law Monday, June 5.

Other fee changes will require ministerial approval if they exceed five per cent, year-over-year. Fees within the five-per cent limit will be at the discretion of local school boards, along with matters like bell times and professional development days.

Also signed Monday was the School Transportation Regulation, which eliminates school busing fees for students who live 2.4 km or more from their designated school. If those students use transit, they’ll only be responsible for the difference between provincial funding and the price of a bus pass.

The changes also remove busing fees for special needs and kindergarten students who go home at lunchtime.
