Changes made to Sylvan Lake visitor pay parking program

Jun 7, 2017 | 2:48 PM

Visitor pay parking kicks off in Sylvan Lake on Thursday, but not without a few late changes.

Town council held a special meeting recently to address concerns from the public over how the system was being rolled out.

Council directed Administration to complete the following six actions:

1) Amend the provisions of the Paid Parking Program to designate 15 existing angle parking stalls on the west side of 48 Street as visitor pay stalls, instead of the current Downtown Resident Parking Zone,

2) amend the Pay Parking Program to exempt all handicap parking stalls from pay parking; this exemption applies to both visitors and residents,

3) amend Councillor Payne’s motion to create two, not one, handicap parking stalls on the north end of 48 Street, subject to any restrictions in the Provincial Traffic Regulations,

4) amend the Pay Parking Program to allow four registered vehicles per residence throughout the municipality,

5) prepare a report presenting options for residents in nearby communities to purchase a seasonal parking pass; report to include: fee rational, fee charge, and geographical boundaries, and

6) prepare a report addressing options for exempting active service vehicles from paid parking restrictions.

Prior to the recent meeting, Mayor Sean McIntyre said, “Even with the rollout of the program, there are still ample amounts of free parking available in the downtown. The pay parking program is applicable seasonally, spring through fall, and only in very specific areas. So we’re looking to make sure the rollout is smooth and the application of the program is what it was intended to be.”

Revenue from the Visitor Pay Parking program is to be used for increased enforcement, cleanup and maintenance in the Lakeshore district. It’s expected that the cost of implementing the program, about $535,000, will be recovered after six years of operation.
