Blue Grass and Central Middle Eco Club team up to beautify school

A local business teamed with students this week to beautify a rather unsightly area at a downtown school.

Blue Grass Nursery, Sod and Garden Centre first noticed the Central Middle School Eco Club and ‘Sawing for Schools’ group at the recent Red Deer Home Show.

As teacher Andreanne Tremblay explains, they volunteered from there.

“They wanted to build a vertical garden, and they came in to do a one-on-one gardening session with the kids,” she explains. “Now they’re willing to give us a really good start with this. This looks like a prison, so I’m happy that we get to make it look good.”

Blue Grass, along with Trimmed Line Tree Services pitched in their time to help plant five raised flower beds on Friday.

Steve Richardson with Blue Grass says through their mentorship, they hope students become interested in entering the green sector.

“What we’re doing here today is putting some soil in and we’re going to plant some vegetables and some herbs. Hopefully we get some participation from the kids, and they’ll enjoy and learn that food doesn’t always come from a supermarket, and that you can grow your own,” he said.
