AJHL announce Drayton Valley Thunder have sold

Heading into their 20th season, the Drayton Valley Thunder have announced they are going a new direction.

The Alberta Junior Hockey League announced today that the Board of Governors has unanimously approved the transfer of ownership of the club to a group that includes Monte and Cindy Waronek and Judy Sweet. 

The trio are longtime residents of Drayton Valley, and are board members of the team. 

AJHL Commissioner Ryan Bartoshyk said in a statement  “The AJHL is fortunate to have such a dedicated ownership group to take over the Thunder,” adding “On behalf of the league we want to thank the local ownership group for their outstanding commitment and leadership, not only to the AJHL but also to the town of Drayton Valley”.

In the past, the Thunder were a community operated team.

The club is coming off a season where attendance plummeted, falling by 20.7% compared to the season before.

The team is currently searching for a new head coach, after former head coach and general manager  Jesse Dorrans resigned due to personal reasons last month.
