A number of Albertans were honoured this week receiving the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers.

A ceremony was held at the Legislature in Edmonton to present the 45 recipients with their award.

“The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, which recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians in a wide range of fields, is an official honour created by the Crown and part of the Canadian Honours System. The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers incorporates and replaces the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award and builds on that award’s legacy and spirit by honouring the dedication and commitment of volunteers,” says a release from the province.

Local winners include James A. Bourgoin, Vincent Martin, Bobbi McCoy and Beverly Hanes of Red Deer, Berta Briggs, Barbara Furuness and Sidney Furuness of Wetaskiwin, Robert Crites of Penhold, and Denise Seib of Thorsby.
