MacIntyre pushes government over degree-granting status at RDC

May 26, 2017 | 9:09 AM

Don MacIntyre wants to why it’s taking so long for the province to award polytechnic degree-granting status to Red Deer College.

The Wildrose MLA for Innisfail – Sylvan Lake raised the issue during question period in the Alberta Legislature on Wednesday.

“Central Alberta needs some hope,” MacIntyre said. “When will the government provide Central Alberta with the tools they need for some serious economic development?”

Deputy Premier Joe Ceci responded by saying central Alberta, along with the rest of the province will benefit from nation-leading GDP growth in 2017.

“Red Deer College services a community of 350,000 people,” MacIntyre replied. “Given that this community is particularly affected by the accelerated coal phase-out and given the immense demand for retraining that is already bubbling to the surface in the outcries of desperate coal workers, when will this government be providing Red Deer College with the polytechnic degree-granting status that they need to service my community?”

Marlin Schmidt, Minister of Advanced Education then asked MacIntyre how much of an impact planned cuts by the Wildrose would have on education delivery at RDC.
