Schmitt finally breaks through to win Woody’s Marathon

May 21, 2017 | 8:33 PM

Craig Schmitt finally got over the hump on Sunday.

The Red Deer runner crossed the finish line first at the Woody’s RV World Marathon, finally beating Brendan Lunty of Camrose.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Schmitt said soon after completing his 2:44:37 winning run. “It’s been, I don’t even know, four or five years of finishing second place to the same guy. Today was a great race.”

Running stride for stride with Lunty through 27 kilometres, Schmitt says a late bit of self-motivation ended up pushing him to victory.

“I made a commitment, a two hard kilometre commitment and I gapped him. The last 15 kms I ran scared. I ran scared because it was Brendan.”

Lunty, a six-time winner of the marathon, finished more than nine minutes back of Schmitt with a running time of 2:53:56.

“I think I’ve wanted it more than anybody else here and this one meant a lot to me. To finally get this one was great,” Schmitt added.

Anne Marie Landry won the Women’s Marathon with a time of 3:28:22, three minutes ahead of Cassandra Tomas of Sherwood Park.

Dusty Spiller of Duncan, BC won the Men’s Half-Marathon with a time of 1:17:24. Red Deer’s Brett McPhedran placed second with a time of 1:20:11.

Kristen Spady of Red Deer won the Women’s Half-Marathon at 1:23:27.

Kieran McDonald of Red Deer won the Men’s 10 K with a time of 36:05.

Morgan Lawley of Edmonton won the Women’s 10 K with a time of 40:01.
