Two of Red Deer’s high school football head coaches are being honoured by Football Alberta.

Notre Dame Cougars bench boss Gino Castellan will receive the Frank Morris Award as Tier I Coach of the Year.

After losing just one game during the 2016 regular season, the Cougars downed Hunting Hills in the league final before upsetting number-four ranked Harry Ainlay (Edmonton) in the opening round of provincials.

From there the Cougars became the only team to take a lead vs. the #1 Bev Facey Falcons before bowing to them 32-13 in the Northern Final.

“For this, as well as his commitment to the game of football off field as a Football Canada and Football Alberta Board Member and NCCP Facilitator, we are proud to present Gino Castellan with the Frank Morris Tier I Coach of the Year Award,” Football Alberta says in a release.

Kyle Sedgwick, head coach of the Hunting Hills Lightning is being honoured with the Laurie Robertson Tier II Coach of the Year Award.

The Lightning qualified for Provincials for the sixth straight season in 2016 and made their eight straight appearance in the Central Alberta League Championship game.

Football Alberta says, “This kind of consistent excellence doesn’t just happen. It takes strong leadership and quality coaching both on and off the field.  Kyle Sedgwick embodies those traits to a tee.”

Castellan and Sedgwick will receive their awards Sunday in Calgary.
