Albertans no longer required to return carbon levy rebates when family member dies

EDMONTON – Alberta is bringing in new rules to make amends to more than 4000 families who lost a loved one and were ordered to pay back their carbon tax rebate.

Finance Minister Joe Ceci says no one will be asked to repay the rebate after a death and those who did will get their money back.

Ceci says it was a problem he and his department had not anticipated, but are determined to make right.

The changes are contained in a bill Ceci has introduced in the legislature.

Since January 1st, the province has been taking in tax on gasoline at the pumps and on home heating bills to pay for initiatives to move Alberta to a more green economy.
