Boy rescued by jet boat after falling into river in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT – A 13-year-old boy is safe after being swept away by the South Saskatchewan River on Tuesday evening.

The Medicine Hat Police Service says it was dispatched to the river valley of the city’s Ranchlands area after the boy was swept away by the current, while playing on the river bank with two other boys.

After the teenager was carried downstream about 300 metres, he was able to get onto a small island that was in the middle of the water. The Medicine Hat Fire Department deployed their jet boat to reach him, successfully getting the boy off the island.

He did not sustain any injuries during the incident.

Both the police and the fire department are reminding the public to stay away from the river banks, as the current is strong and the river levels are dangerous around this time of year.
