Police dealing with ‘concerning’ number of vehicle thefts

May 5, 2017 | 8:02 AM

Drayton Valley RCMP have reissued their call for people to lock vehicle doors after vehicle thefts as well as theft-from-vehicle complaints continue to occur.

Mounties say over the past week six vehicles have been stolen, with a further nine broken into. That is on top of five stolen and six broken into last week in a recent spike of vehicle-related crime.

Police added many of the break-ins involved the theft of work tools, wallets and credit cards.

Sergeant Erin Matthews called the recent thefts troubling, and is reminding people to lock their vehicle doors and remove anything valuable within them.

“It is very concerning, people have to make their vehicles not an easy target by leaving valuables inside and leaving doors unlocked.”

Police say there has been cases of windows being smashed out to gain access to the items in the vehicle, so removing them in the first place could help prevent that.

In one of the attempted vehicle thefts, the victim was able to provide a description of the suspect vehicle and its occupants.

It was on April 30 around 10:30 p.m. on 47th Avenue in Drayton Valley when two men in a blue Dodge Ram attempted to steal a Dodge Durango. The two were described as wearing all black, blue jeans and black baseball caps.

Only one of the six vehicles stolen last week have been recovered. Mounties say many that were stolen last week were found in other RCMP jurisdictions in the Thorsby/Breton area as well as Evansburg.

If you ever have a vehicle stolen, police suggest calling them immediately. To help their investigation, know your license plate number, the car’s vehicle identification number and how much gas you have in it. Police say knowing how much fuel is in a vehicle gives them an idea of how far the criminal could travel until abandoning it.
