EDMONTON - Alberta's police watchdog is investigating the death of a man in police custody in Edmonton.

Police said around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, officers found a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant at a home near 106 Street and 47 Avenue in the city's south end.

He appeared to be under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.

It's believed the man consumed a quantity of pills and then threw the bottle off the balcony.

Police say he appeared to be in distress a short time later and was taken to hospital where he died.
